During conferences with parents, it is important to spend the time given as efficiently as possible. If there is only one conference that occurs and yearlong recommendations are made, all partnership elements should be used- communication, respect, commitment, advocacy, professional skills, and trust. It is important to prepare in advance for these meetings. When doing this there should be a designated service coordinator, invite and prepare participants (and students when appropriate), take care of logistical considerations, and exchange information in advance.Things to keep in thought are as follows:
-Connect with the parents and student, then start
-Review the student's nondiscriminatory evaluation and current levels of performance
-Share your thoughts and take into account the parents' and student's thoughts about resources, priorities, and concerns
-Share each other's visions and great expectations and attainment of equal opportunity, independent living, full participation, and economic sufficiency.
Things to keep in mind during the process of making action plans and vision statements are as follows:
-Consider the interaction of proposed and prioritized goals, services, and placement
-Translate priorities into written goals or outcomes
-Determine the nature of special education, related services, least restrictive placement, and supplementary aids and services
-Determine what, if any, appropriate modifications the student needs to participate in state and district assessment and take into account the five special factors
-Conclude the conference
When concluding the conference professionals should synthesize the family's and professional's recommendations, develop an action plan for follow-up responsibility, acknowledge and affirm contributions from the family and others, express great expectations for ongoing collaboration in implementing the plan, and encourage the family to contact other members with follow-up questions or suggestions.
